Big kids’ books - reading for working mums
In the Squid’s first year, I found Baby Love by Rebecca Walker to be my bible, stained with tears and other unmmentionable matter. Too late it consoled me about the moveable lump I demanded a house call for, and the numerous rashes that beset both our bodies.
Now I’m a big kid again, I can sometimes put down Where’s My Potty? long enought to look at something without pictures.
Here’s a reading list recommended to transport you to another place:
-
Cloudstreet, by Tim Winton. Who would have thought all those annoying people who raved about it would be right?
-
Bliss, by Peter Carey. It’s still good. Not everyone’s family is more normal than yours.
-
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Berendt. There’s no better place to escape than the old south.
-
In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote. You’ll think twice about throttling that mean-eyed mother who stole the last park at the childcare centre.
-
The Magic Faraway Tree, by Enid Blighton. Your child isn’t the only one who wishes a new land sometimes arrived at the top of the tree.
